What it involves

Minimally invasive treatment in which botulinum toxin is injected into the masseter muscles, after applying local cooling. It temporarily relaxes these muscles and helps reduce the clenching force and nighttime grinding associated with bruxism.

First we assess whether the treatment is right for you. Includes evaluation, follow-up and touch-up if needed. The effect lasts approximately 4 to 6 months and varies from person to person.

After your session

Aftercare

These are the instructions Dr. Wohllk gives to each patient.

  • Avoid touching the treated area for 2 days.
  • Avoid makeup and creams on the area for 2 days.
  • Avoid intense physical activity for at least 2 days.
  • Avoid lying down and tilting your head forward, back or to the sides for at least 5 hours.
  • Avoid very sudden movements.
  • Avoid saunas, steam baths and very hot showers directly on the face for 2 days.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and use SPF 50 sunscreen.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 2 days.
  • Do not have laser, chemical peels or facial cleansing for at least 28 days.

Remember

  • The effect is not immediate. It kicks in between the third and fourth day, with maximum effect at 14 days.
  • The initial swelling and redness can last from 2 days to 1 week; it is normal and varies from patient to patient.
  • If you get a bruise, use arnica gel or local cold.
  • We recommend coming back within 4 to 5 months.
